Over the break, I saw the movie “Queen and Slim” with my family. I watched it after an emotional experience, and then the movie only heightened my emotional fragility. I was moved. Even though I have my critiques, I must say that the visuals were stunning. I chose this iconic image for a few reasons: the movie was on my mind, my friend has a jacket that has the same neckline, and all you have to do to recreate the photo is look at another person. I know that I am white and do not have a car to sit on or a small animal print dress, but I feel the most important part of this image is what Queen glancing at Slim, and Slim’s cool glance at the camera tells about their complex and sudden relationship. It was a lot harder to recreate than I thought it would be because I couldn’t look at my friend without laughing. It felt uncomfortable to study someone’s face when they aren’t looking at you, but know that you are looking at them. Recreating this image helped to reinforce the emotions prevalent in this scene.

This assignment for me was about pushing the bounderies of a sunday sketch and exploring different concepts I’ve learned throughout the semester. The first aspect of this comic that I focused on was the idea of a cool medium. I believe that the intention of this comic was to increase the content of the panels as the size of the page increased. In understanding this task I decided to do the opposite and make the content stay the same and even decrease as the panel size increased. This was very intentional in keeping the content of the panel simple because I wanted to draw the readers eyes to immense blank space of the comic.

The second element I decided to incorporate into this comic was the idea of a loop. I was first introduced to this concept in one of Isaac’s first posts and I’d been waiting for an oppourtunity to try it out with my own spin. The loop in this comic is that the size of the stick figure in the last panel is the exact same size as the size of the figure in the first panel. This is really to drive home the idea that “no matter how big I get, I’ll always feel small on the inside.

This comic for me was personal in that I dealt with feelings that I’ve felt for a while. Overtime they have gotten better which has directly been a product of the positive people and environment I’ve surrounded myself with at Emory. The difficulty with this comic was finding which story to tell. Which also had to do with the fact that I’ve already done this assignment for a previous post. Overall I’m very proud of what I was able to do with this comic and the creativity that I incroporated into it.

When starting my thought process for this assignment it was funny to me that this was the first thing I thought about to use to create my true story. Yes, this story is 100% true. No add-ons, nothing exaggerated, pure truth. To explain it in words, when I was younger my three very evil and older guy cousins would be over my house all the time and would basically bully me in my own home. This particular time they decided to pull a prank on me because I really wanted to go to the park but they wouldn’t take me but they tricked me into thinking we were by leading me outside and towards the park. Unfortunately, towards the park is also towards the train tracks at the end of my street. And thats where they put me and ran away without me.

It’s a sad funny story that I occasionally remember but I make them pay for it now that I’m older by having them buy me things of course. Since they wanted to be monsters when I was innocent this is what happens. Drawing the comic was a hilarious moment for me as well because I got to give them all evil faces which makes it even more funny when you have no idea whats going to come next in my opinion. This has been one of my favorite comics and assignments thus far.
